Oksana and Alex are two former doctoral students of Luxembourgish-Ukrainian nationality. When we tried to contact them a few days ago, they fled Ukraine and tried to reach Luxembourg via Poland. It was terrible and we couldn’t do anything but hope. At the start of the war, they were in Kharkiv just a few kilometers from the Russian border. Please read their statement:

During the past 3 weeks, the life of Ukrainians changed dramatically. On the 24th of February, we woke up in Kharkiv, Ukraine from the sound of bombings and shootings, already understanding that our peaceful life and lives of millions other people, as we used to know it, came to an end.

The following days were dreadful and devastating for our family and the whole Ukrainian nation: constant shelling, shootings, air raids, curfews, days and nights spent in the bomb shelters, lack of food and drinking water tormented the lives of millions of Ukrainian families.

This calamity made millions of Ukrainians abandon their peaceful lives to protect their homes and families or flee from the country.

We came home to visit our family and celebrate our successful PhD defense, and in the blink of an eye we happened to be in the war zone, trying to evacuate from Kharkiv in overfilled trains under constant shelling, leaving our home and everything we had behind.

Having reached Luxembourg, we feel the urgent need to help those people, who had no possibility to leave or those who were displaced and had to start building their lives from scratch, including our own parents and friends, who came here without knowing the language(s) and without any financial means to live.

Nous considérons que les Amis de l’Université du Luxembourg ne peuvent pas rester passifs devant le drame ukrainien. Nous allons lever des fonds pour aider et les étudiants ukrainiens qui sont déjà à l’Université et les futurs étudiants qui sont en train d’arriver ces jours-là de leur pays. Nous travaillons sur plusieurs sources possibles de financement, mais une essentielle sont nos membres et sympathisants. C’est la raison pour laquelle je voudrais vous demander de contribuer à ce fonds avec un montant de votre choix. Nous croyons être capables de lever en tout au-delà de 20,000 €, qui pourront soutenir les étudiants ciblés. La Vice-rectrice de l’Université, Madame Catherine Léglu, que vous connaissez, puisqu’elle intervient souvent dans nos événements, coordonne les différents efforts dans l’entourage de l’Université. Unis, nous pourrons contribuer à mitiger cette catastrophe.

Vous serez informés, déjà lors de notre Assemblée Générale, fin mars, de la suite de cette initiative. Je vous remercie très sincèrement de votre attention et de votre soutien.

J’ai rencontré récemment les deux étudiants de l’Université qui venaient tout juste de rentrer de l’Ukraine, leur pays d’origine et qui nous ont fait ce témoignage émouvant. Oksana et Alex pourront nous conseiller dans nos actions d’aide aux étudiants ukrainiens de l’Université du Luxembourg. Alex, est en même temps membre de notre Conseil d’Administration.
